Council calls for faster deployment
The Council has adopted conclusions emphasizing the importance of geothermal energy—harnessed from the Earth’s natural heat—as a vital, renewable resource for Europe. These conclusions outline concrete steps to expedite the deployment of geothermal energy across the continent, underscoring its potential to drive Europe’s transition to a sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective energy system.
Recognizing geothermal energy as a cornerstone of Europe’s green energy transformation, the conclusions align with calls from the European Parliament (EP), the Committee of the Regions (CoR), and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). These institutions have urged the European Commission to develop a dedicated European Geothermal Action Plan to promote the widespread adoption of this technology.
The Council’s conclusions highlight the pivotal role geothermal energy can play in decarbonizing both buildings and industrial processes, reinforcing its value as a local and reliable energy source for heating and cooling, power production, thermal energy storage and co-production of minerals. This commitment is bolstered by recent assurances from the new Energy Commissioner, who pledged to prioritize initiatives supporting geothermal energy development.
One key proposal includes establishing a European Geothermal Alliance, a collaborative platform designed to unite stakeholders, streamline innovation, and advance geothermal solutions. Such an alliance is seen as essential to fostering cooperation and accelerating progress across Europe.
This decision marks a significant step forward in addressing the challenges of climate change and energy security, paving the way for a greener and more independent energy future for Europe.
